Review:

Volgarr the Viking is an Action-Platformer with a Conan the Barbarian-esque vibe to it, with players taking on hordes of enemies using their sword and spears.

The presentation here is simple but not bad, with decent but unspectacular graphics saved largely by its strong testosterone-fueled theming. Much of the credit for this actually goes to the game’s sound effects, which pair manly grunts with beefy thwacks of the sword.

In terms of gameplay, Volgarr has a decent move set, with both a melee attack and a slower throwing spear attack that doubles as an extra platform when it sticks in a wall. There’s also a double jump attack, a dodge roll, and added abilities gained through power-ups. Overall, moving around in Volgarr feels a bit on the slow side, but otherwise not bad.

The thing that’s really gonna’ make it or break it for some people is going to be the difficulty level – this game borrows a page out of the Ghosts ‘N’ Goblins series by being damn difficult, with endless hordes of enemies attacking you, and with Volgarr only ever able to take one or two hits before dying and being sent back to the beginning of the section, which can be quite a distance. This high difficulty level is really going to be the factor that determines whether a player enjoys this game or not – some will embrace the challenge and see it as a call to work toward improving their skill, but others will see it as frustrating and needlessly tedious.

In the end, Volgarr is a solid Action-Platformer with a high difficulty level that’s bound to result in it being fairly niche in its appeal. The gameplay here is very good, but only the more skilled gamers, or the more patient, will truly be able to appreciate it. If you’re looking for a good game to test your skills, this might be what you’re looking for. Otherwise, you may want to look elsewhere.

tl;dr – Volgarr is an Action-Platformer where players take the role of a Conan-type warrior and fight through hordes of enemies in challenging levels. The gameplay here is very good, but only if you have the skill or patience to deal with its high difficulty level.
