Review:

Warlocks 2, released in 2019 on PC and Nintendo Switch, is a game that combines Action-Platformer and Action-RPG elements. In this game, players take the role of an aspiring warlock who finds themselves captured by enemies and then shortly afterward freed and sent on tasks for a hodgepodge of odd characters.

This game’s presentation uses 2D visuals with some decent animation, backed by an eclectic soundtrack to match this game’s somewhat offbeat tone. It works, though it’s nothing special.

As for the gameplay… this is a mess. This game combines numerous elements, but it fails to do any of them well. It’s an Action-Platformer, but the Platforming is terrible, the controls are awkward (and cannot be changed), the level design is makelike, monotonous and boring, and the combat is slow, clunky, and just plain not fun. Meanwhile, this game is also an Action-RPG, only your character progression is slow and options are limited, the story fails to properly give us any reason to care about its characters, and even the characters you select from at the beginning all seem to use the same dialogue.

I suppose you could say that Warlocks 2 is a “Jack of all trades, master of none”, but honestly even that gives this game too much credit, as nothing it does here is especially inspired or revelatory, and each of the game’s elements is so poorly done, it falls well below anything that could even be considered a “master”. I suppose some people may find enough to like in this slog to tolerate its flaws, but I feel there are far too many good games to bother with this sub-par one.

tl;dr – Warlocks 2 is a game that combines Action-Platformer and Action-RPG elements, with players taking on the role of a would-be warlock doing favors for an assortment of odd characters. Unfortunately, this game does a poor job of just about everything it tries to do. Terrible controls, poor progression, limited choice, repetitive levels, frustrating combat, a story that’s not at all compelling… I suppose some players may find something to like here, but there’s so little here that’s truly enjoyable for me to recommend this game over the countless better options you have.

Grade: D+
