Review:
Warlock’s Tower is a family-friendly character-based Puzzle game released in 2017 on PC and mobile devices, then in 2019 ported to PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. In this game, players take the role of a mailman trying to work his way up the tower of a crazed warlock in order to deliver a letter. However, doing so is tricky as each step taken in the tower ticks down a counter to your death.
The presentation in Warlock’s Tower is delightfully retro, using 2D pixel art visuals with an extremely limited color palette to evoke memories of the original Game Boy, along with a catchy chiptune soundtrack to match. The result is a game that absolutely looks and sounds like something that could have been released on the old Game Boy, which fits the game’s simplistic design perfectly.
The game’s design has you starting each room (level) with only three “lives” that are used up with each step, though rooms are littered with gemstones bearing numbers that will replenish your steps to whatever number they list. Using this, players must decide on a proper path through each level so they can reach its exit door without running their counter down. This simple premise makes for some really clever level design that requires players to take their time and think carefully about how to move.
If there’s a flaw here, it’s that Warlock’s Tower doesn’t do anything truly unique or original beyond its core concept, and that concept is not so novel that it’s likely to blow anyone’s mind. However, even with this being the case, this is a solid and well-made character-based Puzzle game, and I think most fans of the genre will find it well worth the low $5 asking price.
tl;dr – Warlock’s Tower is a family-friendly character-based Puzzle game where players take the role of a mailman delivering a letter to a warlock at the top of a tower where every step brings you closer to death. The game’s simple concept and Game Boy-styled presentation work very well, and though this game doesn’t do anything truly extraordinary, Puzzle game fans will likely find this to be well worth the $5 price tag.
