Review:

Marshmallows is a multiplayer-focused Action-Platformer with 2-Stick Shooter mechanics released on PC in 2021 and brought to Nintendo Switch in 2022. This game has players fighting other players as anthropomorphized marshmallow-shaped people. Yeah, I dunno.

Marshmallows features silly 2D art for its backgrounds and characters, backed by energetic music. It’s nothing especially noteworthy save for one thing – the Warshmallows Theme is fantastic. It’s equal parts rock and ridiculous, and more than anything else I think this is the one element of this game you’re likely to remember the most a few years from now.

As for the gameplay, this is a decent but unspectacular arena-based Action-Platformer. It’s mostly fairly straightforward, with mechanics that have enough depth to keep things interesting for more skilled players.

Having said that, the game does suffer from a number of issues. The default controls are terrible – if you play the game, your first order of business will be to go into the options menu to remap them. Also, the extremely limited ammo of weaponry in the game is highly frustrating, and the fast pace makes it hard to play intelligently, rather than just spraying an enemy’s area with bullets and hoping you hit the mark. There’s also not enough variety in characters, weapons, and stages. And finally, players hoping to find some decent competition online will be sorely disappointed – the online lobbies seem to be abandoned at this point.

I think it’s fair to say that Warshmallows has more than its share of issues. However, the core gameplay is reasonably fun, and the presentation is great (or at least, the main theme is great). Action-Platformer fans may find something worthwhile here, though I think most players have better options on the Nintendo Switch.

tl;dr – Warshmallows is an arena-based multiplayer-focused Action-Platformer with 2-Stick Shooter elements where players try to blast each other away as anthropomorphic marshmallows. There’s some decent gameplay at the core of this game, and the title theme is wonderful, but there’s numerous issues including a disappointing lack of content that are keeping this game from being as good as it could be. Action fans may enjoy this, but there are far better options on the Nintendo Switch.

Grade: C
