Review:
Watermelon Party is a Puzzle/Party Game with gameplay that shares a lot in common with the classic puzzle game Pipe Dream. Like that game, you’re given random pieces to build a path to follow, and players must use these pieces wisely. However, unlike that game, you’re not trying to get from point A to point B. Rather, you are trying to chart a path that will take your character to each piece of watermelon on your portion of the screen.
Thankfully, if you mess up, you can drop a bomb that will clear pieces you don’t want, or reset your character to the start of the path if s/he is caught in the blast. As such, you must decide if the best strategy is to place pieces more carefully to try to work out a path to get all of them in one run, or to place them quickly and blast your way to the ones you didn’t get on your first run-through.
It’s a solid formula that works well for a party game, and the cutesy visuals compliment it well. The only issue here is, this is about as bare-bones a release as you can get. There’s no single-player mode, no online support, no level or skin editor. All players can do is choose the win count, their character (all of them play the same), and each player’s individual difficulty, and that’s it.
As a result, Watermelon Party is a fun little party game if you just want to throw down for ten or fifteen minutes and then move on to something else. Just don’t expect anything substantial here.
tl;dr – Watermelon Party is a Puzzle/Party Game that plays a lot like Pipe Dream, laying down paths to try to be the first to get your character to all of the watermelon pieces. It’s fun and works well, but is woefully lacking in features, and it won’t take long before you decide to move on to something else.
