Review:
Windjammers is a top-down Frisbee game (er, sorry, “disc” game. Apparently “Frisbee” is trademarked or something) where two characters are tossing a disc around a field trying to get past the other player to score a goal. So like a slightly more elaborate version of Pong, basically. This game was first released in arcades and on the NEOGEO console in 1994, and has since been ported to multiple systems, and now it reaches the Nintendo Switch with added online support.
At its core, Windjammers is a pretty simple game. You move around your side of the field, you can do a quick dash, and when the disc comes to you, you can either toss it back immediately for a speedy return, hold on to it to throw it at your liesure, or you can bump it into the air to set yourself up for a power move (think of how Volleyball works with bumping and spiking). Different characters have different stats and different power moves, and… that’s about it.
The simple gameplay has held up relatively well here, giving the game a classic, arcadey feel. It might be a tad too simple for some, but the core gameplay is solid, and works well as a good 1v1 competitive skill-based game, which is all the more reason the added online competitive play is a great addition.
Visually, the game looks good, with bright colors and a nostalgic 16-bit style (because, well, that’s what games looked like when this game was released). It’s clean and inviting and brings the focus to the fast-paced gameplay.
In the end, Windjammers is a simple, classic competitive sports game that holds up fairly well, and this is a decent port. Fans of the original and players looking for a decent 1v1 game for local or online play should find this to be a good bet.
tl;dr – Windjammers is a competitive 1v1 sports game with discs that plays somewhat like Pong. Originally released in arcades and on the NEOGEO in 1994, the game holds up well today, and the addition of online play is a good compliment to this style of gameplay.
