Wolflame is a Shmup originally released on PC in 2016 and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2020. This is a game that features a style of gameplay roughly similar to classic games in the genre like the Raiden series.
In terms of presentation, Wolflame is pretty good, with pixel art graphics in a retro style that work well for this sort of game, giving it a classic feel. This is paired with a soundtrack that works well enough, but is pretty forgettable.
As for the gameplay, this is pretty standard fare for the most part, and doesn’t do too much to distinguish itself. In fact, there are a few flaws I can point to here – some of the enemies fire bullets that move a bit too fast to easily evade, and there isn’t much variety in the weapons you can use or the enemies you fight.
Overall, Wolflame is a decent but largely forgettable Shmup. Probably its greatest strength is its retro style, but it’s imitating other, more memorable games in the genre without really carving out much of a niche of its own. If you’re a fan of the genre, you might find this to be okay, but there are other games that are a better use of your time.
tl;dr – Wolflame is a retro-style Shmup in the same vein as games like the Raiden series. It’s decent, but does little to distinguish itself within the genre, and has a few flaws of its own. It’s not bad, but nothing special either.
