Review:
Okay, I get that some games aren’t made for me. Back when I did the game critic gig ages ago, I can’t tell you how many Barbie games I had to review, and those weren’t meant for me. I always looked at it from the perspective of, “is this game good for its intended target audience?”
The thing is, I don’t really know who the intended target audience for Word Puzzles by Powgi is.
I originally got this game because I genuinely like playing with the English language and hoped this would kinda’ scratch that itch. However, after loading it up, I soon found that the game was loaded with atrocious music and a presentation that was bouncy in a way that clearly seemed intended to appeal to those in the early years of grade school… and only people that age.
Okay, fine, not a game for me. But is it a game for early grade schoolers?
After seeing a bit more of it, I’m honestly scratching my head on this question. Everything about the presentation screams “this is for young kids only”, but then you get into some of the word puzzles, and particularly some of the vocabulary, and I just have to wonder… is it, though? Is it really?
How many kids in kindergarten or first grade know words like “turmeric” and “macaque”?
Even beyond this identity crisis, this game has problems. The presentation is about as bare-bones as you can get. The puzzles are presented cleanly, but with as little color or fanfare as possible. There’s nothing presented here that you couldn’t also get from printed pages save for someone to check the answers and provide hints.
If you’re older than ten and looking for a game for yourself, skip Word Puzzles by Powgi even if you like letter puzzles – you can undoubtedly find more entertaining ones online. And if you’re looking for a good game to get a kid under ten… also skip this one. The vocabulary is really uneven and there are sure to be other games that have a more enticing presentation.
tl;dr – Word Puzzles by Powgi is a collection of letter puzzles that has a sparse and unappealing presentation, music that will annoy the hell out of anyone older than six, and a vocabulary selection that oddly spans from “baby’s first words” to “turmeric” and “macaque”. Skip it.
