Review:

Word Sudoku is a Sudoku Puzzle game where the traditional numbers of Sudoku have been replaced with letters from various nine-letter words. However, the core Sudoku gameplay remains untouched, so those familiar with how Sudoku works need not worry about learning new rules. This game has 240 puzzles total, spread across multiple levels of difficulty.

For those unfamiliar with Sudoku, the premise is that you are filling a 9×9 grid with numbers so that each column and row has all numbers in it and no repeating numbers, and in addition each 3×3 section within the grid also has all nine numbers and no repeating numbers. To guide you, some of the numbers will already be filled in, and you’ll be tasked with using logic to fill in the rest.

The presentation here is… well, terrible. The visuals are bland black and white, which works well enough but is pretty visually boring next to most of the other Sudoku games on the Switch. What’s more, this game has terrible, grating music that will have players reaching for the mute button.

As for changing the numbers to letters, it’s actually a bit frustrating, as it’s harder to read the tiny print when you’re making notes. Thankfully, there’s a menu option to toggle the game back to regular numbers, at least.

As for the controls, this game makes the player go through the tedious process of re-selecting the letter they want to put in every time they make an input, rather than simply remembering the last input and sticking with that until the player changes it. They also need to manually switch between writing in answers and notes, which is even more annoying.

As Sudoku games go, Word Sudoku does the bare minimum to bring Sudoku to the Switch, and while the game does give players the option to see letters instead of numbers, odds are good you’ll want to swap back for numbers pretty quickly. Add in terrible controls and a bland presentation with awful music, and this is probably a version of the game you’ll want to skip.

tl;dr – Word Sudoku is a Sudoku Puzzle game that swaps out the numbers for letters (though players can use numbers instead if they prefer). The game has 240 puzzles, and it suffers from frustrating and tedious controls, bland visuals, and terrible music you’ll want to mute. If you want Sudoku on the Switch, you have better options.
