Review:

Worms W.M.D. is the latest in the long-running series of multiplayer-focused Strategy/Party Games that have players taking turns guiding one of their team of worms into position to use one of their various weapons to take out the other player’s worms.

If you’ve played any of those other games, you know much of what to expect here. It’s a fun exercise in deciding how to best use your weaponry along with the game’s physics to attack the enemy.

This time around, the game adds various vehicles your worms can hop in to fight the enemy, buildings to hunker down and hide in, mounted weaponry, and a new crafting system, among other things. Honestly, I didn’t really find any of this added too much to the gameplay here, but it didn’t really take anything away from it either, though I was kinda’ disappointed at how little use the crafting system seemed to be, since often crafting what you want requires resources you just don’t have and there’s no apparent way to acquire them.

This entry in the series also adds some really nicely detailed hand-drawn visuals as well, although as per usual for this series, these visuals don’t look quite right when bits and pieces of them get blasted away. Also, I wonder if these details are the biggest factor in the game’s whopping 4.9GB file size. For a 2D game in a series whose gameplay hasn’t changed significantly for over 20 years, taking up that much space in the memory seems really unnecessary.

Still, if that doesn’t bother you, Worms W.M.D. is still the same great multiplayer experience the series has always been. While none of the changes in this entry do much to change the core gameplay, the core gameplay is still pretty good, so those looking to enjoy Worms on their Switch will find this to be a good choice.

tl;dr – Worms W.M.D. brings a slew of new features to the series, but for the most part this is more of the same classic multiplayer-focused Strategy gameplay that the series has been known for. Just be warned if you’re getting this in digital format – this game is an absurd 4.9GB big.
