Review:
YouTube is a Video Application and service that started in 2005, and in the time since it has reached numerous platforms, including multiple videogame platforms. In 2018, Nintendo joined that list of platforms. YouTube can be watched for free with ads, or they can upgrade to one of various memberships for the ability to get rid of the ads and get access to more content.
There’s a less talked-about feature of YouTube that may be particularly of interest to Nintendo Switch owners, since as of this writing the Nintendo Switch does not feature Vudu or any of the other MoviesAnywhere streaming services that allow you to watch digital versions of movies you purchased on DVD or Blu-Ray – YouTube has a MoviesAnywhere feature nestled away within it. Just link up your YouTube and MoviesAnywhere account, go to Library tab in YouTube, and all of your MoviesAnywhere content will be listed right there under Your Movies and Shows. If you’ve ever wondered what those pieces of paper that come with your DVD offering you a “digital copy”, this is it. Cool, huh?
Er… but I digress…
YouTube on Nintendo Switch doesn’t do much else that’s extremely surprising in either the “good” or “bad” categories. There’s touchscreen support, but only for selecting menu items and picking videos, not for scrolling (oddly). This version of YouTube does not let you upload videos directly from your Nintendo Switch, doesn’t let you comment on videos, and doesn’t let you play music while your Nintendo Switch is in sleep mode. None of this is especially awful, but I note it here so you know as well.
Still, it’s hard to fault YouTube on Nintendo Switch all that much. It does pretty much everything you expect it to (and maybe a tad more) and doesn’t have any major flaws. There’s nothing truly special about this version, but Nintendo Switch owners will likely want to download it regardless, just to have one more option to watch streaming videos when they’re online.
tl;dr – YouTube is a streaming Video Application for watching user-created videos (as well as access to your MoviesAnywhere account and associated content). The Nintendo Switch version of the app doesn’t do anything particularly extraordinary, but it works just fine and the wealth of content it allows access to all for free makes it hard to complain about. You probably already have YouTube on countless other devices, but the Nintendo Switch version is still well worth having.
