Review:

Tiny World Racing is a family-friendly Top-Down Racing game released on the Nintendo Switch in 2020. This is a pretty simple racing game that brings to mind classics of the genre like R.C. Pro-Am and the old Micro Machines games.

This game’s presentation uses fairly simple 2D graphics in a style that’s colorful and appealing albeit not very impressive. This is paired with energetic music and simple sound effects that work but aren’t especially memorable.

The gameplay here is fine for what it is, although it’s not very nuanced. Players basically play with only the D-Pad or control stick and two buttons, a gas button and a weapon button, with weapons collected by driving over pickups on the track. Players get their choice of sixteen different vehicles to drive, but they all seem to control exactly the same.

While the gameplay here is simple and straightforward, I will at least give this game credit for having a good amount of bang for your buck when it comes to content. For $4, players get 20 courses, and while many of them share similar motifs, the game makes a good effort to ensure that they all have distinct differences from one another. The game also makes for a nice Party game due to its 4-player split-screen gameplay.

Beyond the simplicity of the gameplay, there are a few complaints I can make here. Firstly, this game’s hit detection when it comes to course obstacles is pretty spotty – sometimes I’ll be stopped suddenly even though there’s plenty of room between me and an obstacle, other times I’ll be driving off-road for a good few seconds without any change in my speed or controls.

However, in the end, Tiny World Racing is a decent but unspectacular Racing game that does a good job with a well-worn formula, but doesn’t do much more than that. If you’re looking for a simple racing game to play with friends for a few bucks, this isn’t a bad choice, but if you’re wanting a more substantial experience, you may want to get something else.

tl;dr – Tiny World Racing is a family-friendly Top-Down Racing game similar to classics like R.C. Pro-Am. It’s simple and unambitious, doing nothing noteworthy for the genre, but it’s got a decent amount of content for its $4 asking price and should make for a little fun with four players, though it’s nothing you’ll want to spend a ton of time with.
