Review:
Toki Tori is a family-friendly Puzzle-Platformer originally released to Game Boy Color all the way back in 2001 and subsequently remade on multiple platforms in 2009, and the game getting remade again with HD graphics for the Wii U in 2013, with the Nintendo Switch getting a version of the game in 2018. In this game, players control a bird walking around self-contained levels with no way to jump limited use of item abilities, trying to make use of those abilities to gather all of the eggs in that level.
Despite the extremely simple premise of the game, the repeated refreshes of the game are definitely noticeable in the visuals. While the character designs and level layouts remain simple, the visuals depicting those simple designs are gorgeous, with high levels of detail and extremely fluid animations.
Unfortunately, I cannot give the same high level of praise to this game’s sound. It’s energetic soundtrack is both generic-sounding and annoying, and its chirpy sound effects are often so shrill that they were painful to listen to. Also, while I appreciate the work that went into the remake here, I do wish the game gave players the option to use the original old-school visuals – it would have been a nice touch.
As for the game itself, this is a pretty solid Puzzle-Platformer, but nothing that really revolutionizes the genre in any way. Some of your abilities in the game, such as an ability to teleport, and the ability to lay “ghost traps” to melt floors away, are pretty clever, but the restrictions placed on their use do make it feel like you’re required to use them pretty much only where the puzzles want you to use them, which cuts down on their utility.
I should also note that the Nintendo Switch version of the game, while adding features like HD rumble, is also missing features like touchscreen support that were present in the Wii U version of the game (as well as the 3DS and mobile versions), which is a bit disappointing.
Overall, Toki Tori is a decent but unspectacular Puzzle-Platformer with fantastic visuals, terrible sound, and missing features from earlier versions. Fans of the genre may still want to get the game, but others may find it hard to say whether its merits outweigh its flaws.
tl;dr – Toki Tori is a Puzzle-Platformer that has been remade multiple times over the years, and its release on the Nintendo Switch has it getting gorgeous graphics, terrible sound, and missing features like touchscreen that were in earlier versions of the game. This is still a decent game, but its flaws definitely mar the experience.
