Review:

Towertale is an Action-Platformer that has players taking on one of four distinct medieval fantasy-themed characters and taking on a series of bosses. This game was released on PC in 2019 and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2020.

This game’s presentation isn’t likely to thrill anyone, featuring simple hand-drawn visuals with pretty poor animation. The art style here actually reminds me of the Scribblenauts games, though this cutesy style doesn’t really fit the challenging gameplay of the game. Add to these visuals a decent but forgettable orchestral soundtrack and a pretty generic, throwaway story, and there’s nothing here that’s likely to wow anyone.

At the very least the game fares a bit better in the gameplay department. The entire game plays out like a boss rush of sorts – there are no levels to work through, no minions to fight, just one multi-stage boss fight after another. And thankfully, each of the four characters plays differently enough that there’s a bit of variety to your selection, and the boss fights themselves are at times pretty clever… though at other times they’re mind-numbingly simple along the lines of “stand at a distance and spam your projectile attack”. I guess I’d say the combat here is overall good but not great, and since that’s basically the main selling point of this game, that’s kinda’ unfortunate.

Players looking for a challenging series of Action-Platformer boss fights, Towertale may sate your appetite, but there’s nothing here truly extraordinary. The action here is okay but not great, and nothing in the presentation warrants a second look. This isn’t a bad game, but you have better options on the Nintendo Switch.

tl;dr – Towertale is an Action-Platformer that plays out as one big boss rush. The combat here is decent, but isn’t really enough to carry a game that’s otherwise fairly mediocre in just about every way.
