Taimumari is an Action-Platformer originally released on PC in 2015 and ported to Switch in 2019. In it, players play a sword-wielding gal on a magical time-traveling quest to stop an evil bent on destroying the land.
If that plot sounds a bit like a hokey generic anime plot, well, yeah. And it’s delivered with exactly the quality of localization you would expect from a low-budget developer, which is to say pretty bad. However, it’s paired with fairly endearing anime-styled art and decent pixel art graphics that make it somewhat appealing, even if you’ll soon find yourself wanting to skip through its text-heavy and uninteresting story.
The gameplay itself is pretty roughly put together, but actually ends up being fairly fun, combining melee combat with a few projectile attacks and a level structure that should be similar to Mega Man fans, with multiple levels to select from and challenge, with unique weapons to obtain in each that can help you in your fight. Despite the game feeling a bit amateurishly put together, I have to admit that it’s pretty fun.
Really, the one thing that’s keeping me from giving Taimumari a higher recommendation is its price tag – $15 feels really steep for a game this clunky and amateurish, and I feel like a $5 price tag would be a much better fit for this game. Still, if you can manage to catch it on sale, Taimumari has some surprisingly fun gameplay hidden under that clunky exterior, and is worth playing.
tl;dr – Taimumari is an Action-Platformer that combines melee attacks with a Mega Man-style level structure. This is a rough game that feels clunky at times and has a terrible localization, but underneath that is some fun gameplay worth playing, especially if you’re a fan of the genre. At least, if you can get the game at a discount – the standard asking price is far too steep for what’s on offer here.
