Review:

The Adventure Pals is a lighthearted family-friendly Platformer with cartoonish visuals and a wacky random theme that puts me very much in mind of Adventure Time.

This is a silly game, where you carry a backpack with a baby giraffe who flaps his tongue around like a helicopter to slow your fall, where you collect stickers and cupcakes (which are used as a currency), where you beat up people trapped in hot dog suits, and where you can pop yourself into a toaster to propel yourself upwards.

This silly theme is reflected in its atmosphere, with colorful, cartoony characters, and catchy, cheerful music. If the cartoonishly silly appeals to you, this game will be right up your alley.

The gameplay here is mostly pretty standard platformer collectathon fare, and overall it’s very good. It feels fantastic just to move your character around, and you have a lot of good mobility options here. Just jumping, wall-jumping, and helicopter-tongue-ing around the stage is one of the highlights of the game.

The flipside of this is the game’s combat, which is sloppy and button-mashy. Every time I encountered a more serious enemy, I felt my enthusiasm for the game wane, and it’s unfortunate that the great platforming had to be broken up by this mediocre combat.

There are a few other issues too. The level design here is largely linear, which is disappointing when your move set seems like it’d be ideal for a game with more exploration. It can also get pretty repetitive, with the same backgrounds repeatedly reused.

However, even with these flaws, The Adventure Pals is a superb platformer with a fun, silly theme, and that feels great to move around in. The combat may not be great, and the game may be designed in a way that keeps it from living up to its full potential, but this is still a wonderful game for platforming fans, especially younger kids.

tl;dr – The Adventure Pals is a family-friendly Platformer with a wacky theme that seems reminiscent of Adventure Time, with wacky, cartoony hijinks. The platforming here is excellent, even if it’s not as original as the presentation, and broken up by mediocre button-mashy combat. Fans of the genre would do well to give this one a try.
