Review:
The Adventures of Bertram Fiddle: Episode 1: A Dreadly Business (from here out, I’ll simply say Bertram Fiddle) is a Graphic Adventure with a silly, cartoony parody of a stuffy Sherlock Holmes-style character in Victorian England, with a sense of wit somewhere in the general area of the Monkey Island games. Well… maybe not quite that clever, but that’s the goal, in any case.
Fiddle’s adventure will take him to meet characters like the aforementioned Sherlock Holmes, as well as original characters like the wealthy Lord Arthwipe… yeah, that’s about the level of humor you can expect from this game. To be fair, it’s not all groan-inducing, but much of it is.
Beyond the game’s sense of humor, there’s the standard assortment of graphic adventure-style puzzles, some with odd or inexplicable solutions.
Visually, the game has cartoony character designs that are… fine. Nothing super memorable, but they get the job done, I suppose.
Look, I don’t have too much to say about this one, it’s a fairly standard graphic adventure, doing nothing spectacular, but nothing horrible for the genre either. It is merely… okay. Well, except occasional sequences where you need to navigate your character through a crowd in a side-scrolling “chase” stage, those are pretty dull and tedious. But mostly, this is just bog-standard.
My recommendation to you if you want to know whether Bertram Fiddle will appeal to you is to watch a brief snippet of gameplay and see if the game’s sense of humor amuses you. If it does, and if you like graphic adventures, this game might appeal to you. If not, move along.
tl;dr – The Adventures of Bertram Fiddle is a fairly average graphic adventure with a pun-filled sense of humor. It doesn’t really do anything extraordinary for the genre, but neither does it do anything especially terrible either. It is merely okay.
