Review:
The Lightbringer is a 3D Platformer with Puzzle elements released on PC and Nintendo Switch in 2021. This game has players crossing various obstacle course-like levels to use gathered green lights to light up runes and clear corrupted structures at the end of each level.
The game’s presentation is fairly simple, but mostly appealing, using a simple, colorful, slightly-cartoony art style for its 3D visuals. This is backed by a decent but forgettable synthesized soundtrack and some atrociously cringe-worthy poorly-voiced rhyming narration. This game’s presentation is ultimately something that might appeal to young kids, but older players will likely find some of this stuff to be a bit too juvenile. Also, despite the simplistic visuals, I still saw a fair amount of slowdown here in places.
The gameplay is decent but nothing special. There’s very little in the way of originality here, but this game gets the formula for a 3D Platformer mostly right. However, there are numerous issues – the camera requires babysitting and is limited in how much you can adjust it, combat using the character’s boomerang is not good and your character always seems to be facing the wrong way (and moving while aiming is awkward due to the button placement). Also, the puzzles here don’t exactly feel inspired.
Overall, The Lightbringer is still a decent 3D Platformer despite its flaws, but it’s not an especially good or memorable one. If you’re a fan of the genre, you might find this game entertaining for a bit. However, this is the Nintendo Switch, and odds are good that if you’re playing games on a console with Mario on it, you’re used to something more than “decent but not great”.
tl;dr – The Lightbringer is a 3D Platformer with Puzzle elements where you play as a hero restoring light to corrupted ruins. It’s not a bad Platformer, but it doesn’t do anything especially well or memorable, either.
