Review:

Slay Uncool Monsters, released on PC and Nintendo Switch in 2021, is at least nominally a game that combines RPG mechanics with an educational element, having players fight enemies by solving math problems. I say “nominally” because this game appears broken in a way that makes it virtually unplayable.

The presentation here is generally quite good, using appealing 2D pixel art visuals for its characters and menus, and backing this with a chiptune soundtrack that sounds decent enough. But of course, this isn’t the real problem here.

Right from the early menus, this game seems to be broken. Simply trying to select a game mode causes text to overlap itself and everything starts to look messed up. You may be able to stumble your way into a game, selecting numbers to solve a math problem to fight monsters, but completing a math problem seems to freeze the game, requiring players to exit back to the home menu – no other commands are recognized.

I note that others have reviewed this game and do not complain about this problem, so I would guess that it is not a problem that everyone encounters. However, I can only review the game I have in front of me, and the game in front of me is unplayable. As such, I cannot recommend that anyone play it.

tl;dr – Slay Uncool Monsters appears broken, with its opening menus glitching and the game freezing within a minute or so of trying to play. It seems that not everyone has these issues, but I do, and as such this game appears to be completely unplayable and I can only recommend that everyone avoid it.
