Review:

Sally’s Law is a Puzzle-Platformer with a asymmetrical Co-Op mechanic that the game does interesting things with in single-player as well, where a player plays the always-moving-forward Sally, and her can’t-jump father, as the pair work together (sort of) to get Sally to the end of each stage.

In single-player, players first play through a stage as Sally, who constantly moves forward and whose only ability is to jump. Then, they play as Sally’s father, who was apparently secretly there the entire time helping Sally during her journey, getting rid of obstacles and removing hazards. In co-op, both of these characters are played at the same time, which speeds up the gameplay, but also loses something in the game’s story, since a part of the point here is that even when Sally can’t see her father, he’s always there to support her.

While both the gameplay and story have a lot going for them, they also both have their flaws as well. With the gameplay, it can often feel a bit basic. The game does find new ways to challenge players as they progress, but this comes at a snail’s pace, which is even more frustrating due to the slow movement of the game’s characters. In the meantime, the challenge here is pretty low.

As for the story, this game’s story is well-written, but it’s also delivered entirely in Japanese voice-overs with written dialogue, and the game frequently has lulls in the action to draw attention to this story and give players a chance to read it. I have to think that if the game simply had English voice-over, this game’s glacially slow pacing could have been picked up at least a bit.

Graphically, this game doesn’t really have much to offer here, with very simple visuals. At the very least, the soundtrack is nice, although the quiet music only makes the slow pacing even more noticeable.

I really like some of the ideas Sally’s Law has, and its approach to co-op gameplay is actually kinda’ inspired, especially if only one player is playing the game. However, the slow pacing and low challenge level make it hard to stay invested in the game.

tl;dr – Sally’s Law is a Puzzle-Platformer that has players playing as different characters with different abilities cooperating to reach the end of the stage. There are some interesting gameplay ideas here, but they’re buried under some sluggish pacing and an overall lack of challenge.

Grade: C+
