Review:
Note: This game is included in the Shmup Collection Compilation, along with Armed 7 DX and Wolflame
Satazius Next is a Compilation of two Shmup games, Satazius, originally released on PC in 2011, and its remake, Satazius Next, apparently exclusive to this release on Nintendo Switch in 2020. These games are Shmups that have a similar feel to Gradius, albeit with a somewhat different sort of upgrade system.

tl;drThis Shmup has a classic old-school feel to it and some great action, although the way the game has you start with all your weapons and gradually power them up has you feeling overpowered from the start and not seeing a very notable increase in power as you power up. Still, this is a solid entry in the genre well worth playing, and with a pretty great soundtrack too.

tl;drPretty much just repeat what I wrote above – same game, different presentation. Not better or worse, just different, with a different sort of pixel art visuals and with a redone soundtrack.
Both games in this compilation feature 2D pixel art visuals in a style reminiscent of games like Gradius and R-Type, and both the original and remixed soundtracks are solid. All told, a great retro-style presentation.
And as noted above, both games feature the same gameplay, which means both have the same strengths and weaknesses, with the latter being namely that you start with a full loadout, making you feel overpowered from the beginning, but pickups that increase that power don’t feel all that different, save for speed pickups.
Still, Satazius Next is a game with some excellent action, cool bosses, and a solid retro-style presentation. If you’re a fan of the genre you should absolutely consider adding this game to your collection.
tl;dr – Satazius Next is a Compilation of Shmups that includes Satazius and its remake, the titular Satazius Next. Both games are equally solid Shmups with a retro feel to them much like Gradius, and if you enjoy this genre you’ll do well to pick this game up.
Grade: B
