Review:
Sega Ages Alex Kidd in Miracle World is a port of the old Sega Master System Platformer. Having just recently reviewed one of its sequels, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, as a part of the Sega Genesis Classics collection, I can say that Miracle World has definitely aged better than Enchanted Castle… though only just.
Graphically, this game looks like an average entry from the 8-bit era. It’s… okay. Apparently this game was originally intended to be a Dragon Ball licensed title, and it shows in the art style, but beyond the colorful world, there’s not much here that’s super appealing.
As for the gameplay… oof. Again, not as bad as Enchanted Castle, but this is rough. The gameplay is simplistic and repetitive, but what really hurts this game is its incredibly poor hit detection. Add to that a frustratingly small attack range and you have a recipe for frustration.
To its credit, this release of the game does what it can to try to spruce things up, with a rewind feature, a single-level challenge mode, save states, and online score rankings… but that’s still a fresh coat of paint on an old junker.
I think only the most ardent collectors and diehard Sega fans will want to get Sega Ages Alex Kidd in Miracle World. This is arguably the definitive version of the game, but it’s still the definitive version of a terrible game that has aged very poorly.
tl;dr – Sega Ages Alex Kidd in Miracle World is a great port of a terrible Platformer. The Sega Master System classic has aged incredibly poorly, and even the polish this release gives the game doesn’t change its frustrating, repetitive gameplay and atrociously bad hit detection.
