Review:

Sega Ages Gain Ground is a port of the old Sega arcade Top-Down Action game. The Sega Genesis version of this game is also included in the Sega Genesis Classics collection (you can read my review here), but the arcade version has support for three players, somewhat nicer graphics and sound, 10 fewer levels… and in any case, it still plays like a terrible slog.

Yeah, I’m not gonna’ sugarcoat it here – I don’t know how well this game was received back in the day, but in today’s world, this game is simple, slow-paced, and tedious as hell. Your character’s walk speed is slow, your firing range is short, and combat seems to be a simple matter of finding an opening in the enemy’s hail of weaponry and getting a well-aimed shot in. I hate this game.

The Sega Ages version of the game, at least, gives players some decent options.

Firstly, there’s the ability to play the US arcade release of the game, or the Japanese arcade release with “full member mode”, which unlocks all characters from the start. In addition, there’s a rewind feature (more limited than the one in the Sega Genesis Classics collection), and online leaderboards.

If nothing else, Sega Ages Gain Ground can stand as a testament to how dedicated I am to eShopperReviews, that I played this terrible game twice. I did it for you. Now do me a favor and don’t buy this. You can get a version of it in the Sega Genesis Classics collection along with some other actually good games, and you shouldn’t be wasting your money on this trash.

tl;dr – Gain Ground is a top-down action game a bit like the classic Gauntlet, except the characters move slow as molasses. If you really want to try this game, get the Sega Genesis Classics collection – at least that way you have some other good games to play after you see how bad this one is.

Grade: D+
