Review:
Sega Ages Phantasy Star is a port of the classic RPG from the Sega Master System. This is an old game, and it wears its age in a way that will put off most players. The localization is shoddy, the graphics are quaint, and the gameplay is clunky and missing a lot of the refinements modern gamers are used to.
At least in that last area, the folks behind this port of the game have worked to try to make this game a bit less off-putting. The game now automatically maps the game’s first-person perspective dungeons, there’s an option in the menus that increases your walk speed, there’s a Monster Guide to look up info on monsters you’ve encountered, a number of helpful item and magic guides, and there’s the new Ages Mode, which retools the game’s difficulty so it’s not as punishingly hard. Of course, players who want to go without these refinements are able to play the game as it was originally released, but… why would you want that?
In the end, all of these things greatly help Phantasy Star, but this was only ever going to be a game that would appeal to the most diehard Sega fans, and those looking for a truly old-school RPG. Everyone else is probably better off looking elsewhere.
tl;dr – Sega Ages Phantasy Star takes the old Turn-Based RPG and adds a number of improvements to make it less of an ordeal, but it’s still an archaic game that doesn’t hold much appeal for modern gamers.
