Review:

Wonder Boy: Monster Land is a port of the old Sega Arcade Action-Platformer with some RPG elements worked into it. Players jump through platformer levels attacking enemies with a sword, while occasionally ducking into shops to spend the cash they’ve earned on better equipment.

It’s not a bad formula, but there are problems here. Your attack range is frustratingly small, and on top of this the recoil whenever you’re hit is nasty, especially when you’re surrounded by enemies and you bounce between them like you’re in a pinball machine. As you can imagine, this makes combat in the game extremely frustrating. On top of this, your character walks agonizingly slow.

At the very least, this port of the game adds in some nice features, like a more challenging “money hungry” mode, challenges and online leaderboards, and save states, but the core game is still frustrating and just not very fun.

Sega Ages Wonder Boy: Monster Land may appeal to collectors and major Sega fans, but most players are better off skipping it.

tl;dr – Sega Ages Wonder Boy: Monster Land is a solid port of the old Sega Arcade title, but the game has aged poorly. The combination of Action-Platformer gameplay and RPG elements is a good mix, but the slow movement and unforgiving combat makes this game just not very fun to play.
