Shift Happens
Genre: Puzzle-Platformer
Players: 1-2 Co-Op (Local)

Review:
(Note: This game is included in Daedalic Multiplayer Bundle, along with Fling to the Finish and Unrailed!)
Shift Happens is a puzzle-platformer where you take control of two characters, or split up control of those characters between two players (much in the way the Trine games do multiplayer). You must have these two characters cooperate to solve puzzles that generally center on the game’s main mechanic – you have two gooey humanoid characters – one light and one heavy, and you can switch which is light and which is heavy instantaneously.
It’s about as basic a concept as you can get, but to the game’s credit, it finds interesting ways to put it to use, making players think about positioning and physics. Playing the game, I never quite had a “eureka!” moment, but I did have a few “ohh, I get it” moments, so it’s nothing truly imaginative, but it’s interesting enough to keep you going for a while.
The game’s visuals look good. Clean. But not especially compelling or memorable. They don’t get in the way of the gameplay, at least.
That’s about all there is to Shift Happens – it’s a decent Puzzle-Platformer that does what it sets out to do well enough, but doesn’t really do anything phenomenal.
tl;dr – Shift Happens has you controlling two characters (on your own or in co-op) to solve puzzles by switching on the fly which one of them is the light one and which is the heavy one. It does a good job with its concept, but there’s nothing truly memorable or compelling about it.
Grade: C+
