Review:
Sky Force Reloaded is a bullet hell shmup that combines the shooting action with that genre with an RPG-esque upgrade system that encourages grinding to max out your abilities.
Hold on a sec, I know “grinding” can seem like a dirty word, but in this case, it actually works beautifully, pairing with the desire to complete each level with a “perfect” run, and here the game gives players multiple goals in each level to encourage them to come back to do a better job next time, and with a newly-upgraded ship, the next time you tackle a level, you’ll have a better shot at perfecting it, too.
Beyond this, the gameplay here is pretty good. There’s a good variety of enemies, with some inventive bosses, too. There’s nothing that outright revolutionizes the genre, but all of it is top-notch.
On top of this, the game looks visually pretty damn good, with good use of 3D graphics that doesn’t interfere with the gameplay. I have a few minor gripes (the “woooooohooo” of rescued “humans” is cringe-level awkward), but all in all, this game looks great and plays great.
Sky Force Reloaded is a shmup that actually does the trick of making sure that even shmup fans who don’t care about getting the best score or a perfect run still feel an incentive to keep coming back and playing more. Between the solid gameplay and the RPG level progression, this is a shmup that should keep players engaged for a good long while.
tl;dr – Sky Force Reloaded combines quality bullet hell Shmup-style gameplay with RPG-style upgrades in a way that encourages players to keep coming back, along with a good presentation. Fans of the genre should definitely give this one a try.
