Review:
Smash Out, released on Nintendo Switch in 2023, is a family-friendly physics-based Arcade-style game where players use the touchscreen to fling balls at blocks on the screen in an attempt to push them off of the platform they’re standing on. The game’s title seems to be deliberately similar to the mobile game Smash Hit, which has somewhat similar ball-tossing gameplay but uses it in a different manner.
Given this game’s reliance on the touchscreen for its gameplay, it will likely come as no surprise to you that this game cannot be played in docked mode. The touchscreen controls work well enough, but lack any sort of nuance – you’re pretty much just tapping where you want the ball to go, or perhaps a tad higher to account for gravity. There’s no way to toss the ball at an angle or throw a curveball, you can only ever toss it straight forward in a slight arc.
At the very least, the stages themselves have a bit of variety to them. There are stages where you need to get around moving obstructions or break glass, stages where you need to hit blocks into other blocks to knock them out, and stages where you need to ricochet balls off of stationary objects to hit the blocks. There’s nothing truly groundbreaking in this level design, but it is at least decent.
The presentation here is similarly not at all impressive, but decent enough. The game uses simple geometric 3D shapes for its objects and platforms, without any sort of textures. These visuals are backed by a repetitive synthesized theme that isn’t particularly great, but at the very least it isn’t terribly offensive either.
That description, that isn’t particularly great, but isn’t terribly offensive either, can pretty much be extended to the entire game here. Look, I’ll make it simple – Smash Out is a decent but largely unremarkable time-waster of a physics-based Arcade-style game. There’s nothing here that’s likely to thrill anyone, but at $1 for 50 levels, I suspect you’ll find your money isn’t wasted here either.
tl;dr – Smash Out is a family-friendly physics-based Arcade-style game where players use the touchscreen to fling balls at blocks to push them off of a platform. This game does nothing special or extraordinary, but for a mere $1, this is a decent time-waster.
