Smash Star is a Platformer released on Nintendo Switch in 2022 that has players taking the role of a buff, anthropomorphized cat-person seeking to save the other cat-people of his village after they were kidnapped (cat-napped?). To do so, he’ll be making use of his anthropomorphized star-person buddy to grab enemies and make his way through numerous Platforming levels.
While this game’s story doesn’t offer any sort of introduction to its world and characters, and its localization is spotty at best, the rest of the presentation is at least decent, featuring 2D pixel art for its world and characters, and backed by a synthesized soundtrack. It’s nothing extraordinary, but it’s not terrible.
“Nothing extraordinary, but not terrible” also seems to be an apt description for the gameplay. It takes some time getting used to using the start to grab and fling objects and enemies in this game, and the level design is somewhat poor, but once you get the hang of things, this game has its charms.
Ordinarily, I wouldn’t recommend a game like Smash Star. It’s not a terrible Platformer, but it’s a pretty mediocre one. However, with its price tag for a little over $1, and with it being a part of a similarly-inexpensive Compilation, this game still may be worth adding to your collection simply because it’s cheap and not terrible. I know that’s not exactly high praise, but at this price it’s likely better than you’d expect.
tl;dr – Smash Star is a Platformer where you play as a cat-man throwing a star-person to grab and throw enemies. This is a decent but not great retro-style Platformer and while it’s not bad, its biggest selling point is a price tag under $2. Beyond that, this is a fairly mediocre Platformer.
