Snipperclips – Cut It Out Together!
Genre: Puzzle-Platformer
Players: 1-4 Co-Op (Local)
.
Review:
Snipperclips is a Puzzle-Platformer that anthropomorphizes the Switch’s Joycons into characters who players not only make walk around the various stages, but can also use one of them to “snip” the other, cutting off a part of that shape for the purpose of solving the game’s puzzles.
This game actually does a good job of mixing up these puzzles to make good use of the unique gameplay this presents. In one level you’ll be getting both characters into a shape to fit in a dotted line, in another you’ll be changing shape to push a button and then transport a basketball to a hoop. In yet another, you need to mold your characters into a shape capable of holding more water together than either can contain on their own. This variety of puzzles is one of the best parts of this game.
One other thing this game does very well is Co-Op gameplay. While players can control each character individually, there’s something special about getting one or even three friends together to try to coordinate on a puzzle.
Unfortunately, the actual platforming here is less than ideal. These characters are at times a bit fiddly to control, and especially when objects are colliding with each other, controlling them can feel awkward and imprecise. It doesn’t interfere too much with playing the game, but it can certainly cause frustration.
As for the game’s presentation, it’s generally bright and cheerful, fitting the “arts and crafts” theme of the game. It’s not going to thrill anyone, but it works well enough.
Snipperclips is overall an excellent, easygoing Puzzle-Platformer with a great multiplayer component. It has a few rough edges here and there, and there’s nothing here that’s going to be setting the world on fire, but fans of the genre or those looking for a fun, kid-friendly multiplayer game will find that this fits the bill perfectly.
tl;dr – Snipperclips is a Puzzle-Platformer where up to four players control anthropomorphized Joycon controllers snipping off parts of one another to get into shape to solve puzzles. It’s a fun concept that’s well-executed, with a lot of great all-ages Co-Op gameplay. It’s nothing revolutionary or impressive, and there are a few rough edges, but overall this is a solid game worth playing.
