Review:

Sokodice, released on PC and mobile devices in 2020 and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2021, is a Puzzle game where players move dice along a grid of squares, trying to match the top side of each die with the number on the square beneath it.

The presentation here is simple, but decent. The game uses 3D visuals with simple shapes to adorn the otherwise plain-looking dice and grid of squares, and there are some nice shadows, but nothing extravagant. This is backed by a nice, relaxed soundtrack.

The gameplay here is fairly simple and straightforward, but I still found myself having a hard time making it feel like second nature to move the dice in the way I wanted. This is difficult enough in earlier puzzles, but later on the game adds complexity by having players moving multiple dice at a time and including tiles that crumble away after you tread on them. I’m sure for many players, this will probably be a decent Puzzle game, but for whatever reason thi sort of dice-spinning game just doesn’t click with me.

This game includes both gamepad controls and touchscreen controls, but honestly I wasn’t quite satisfied with either of these – gamepad controls insist on you using the analog stick instead of directional buttons, and the touchscreen requires swiping in the general direction you want a cube to move. As a result, both of these inputs felt imprecise. Thankfully, this didn’t often lead to making a wrong move (and players can always undo a move or restart a puzzle even if they do make a mistake), but it still felt like I didn’t have the sort of precision controls I would want for this sort of game.

Finally, I should mention the price. At $6, this is… probably about right for what’s included here. On the one hand, there’s nothing really impressive or truly original going on here, but at the very least the game does include over 100 puzzles, so it seems to more or less balance out.

In the end, Sokodice is a nice, relaxed Puzzle game, but not one that’s very extraordinary or original. If the idea of a Puzzle game that has you moving cubes sounds appealing, you may like this game, but there are more enticing puzzle games on the Nintendo Switch.

tl;dr – Sokodice is a Puzzle game that has players moving dice around to match numbers on tiles. It’s a decent, relaxed Puzzle game, but nothing particularly exciting or original.

Got to this review by clicking on the “Dice” tag on Dicefolk. Not sure how I hadn’t heard of it before, but it sounds like just the quaint sort of thing I’d enjoy and be able to unwind with after work when I’ve not got a lot of energy for something more complex. I do really enjoy Sokoban-style games.
