Review:
Solas 128 is a family-friendly Puzzle Game released on PC and Nintendo Switch in 2021. This game has players using mirrors to redirect colored beams of light to power a damaged computer.
While games of this sort are nothing new, Solas 128 manages to bring something unique to the table with its presentation, which has the light beams bouncing particles along in patterns almost as if this was a Music-Rhythm game. This doesn’t have much effect on the gameplay apart from players needing to sometimes position beams so that particles within the beams collide, but it makes for a nice added touch regardless.
These visuals are depicted using mostly pretty simple 2D visuals, but the geometric designs are at least somewhat visually striking and not boring to look at. And as for the musical elements of these game, they are backed by a catchy electronica soundtrack, though after a while it starts getting a bit repetitive.
Beyond this, I don’t know that I have too much to add. The puzzles are clever, but not so difficult that you’re likely to get stuck for too long. The game has touchscreen support, but the stuff you’re working with is so tiny that your finger will block the view of it, meaning you’re probably better off with traditional gamepad controls.
In the end, Solas 128 is a solid light and mirrors-style Puzzle game that stands out with its classy presentation, but doesn’t revolutionize anything. If you’re a fan of Puzzle games, this will probably satisfy you, unless you’ve grown sick of this style of Puzzle game.
tl;dr – Solas 128 is a Family-Friendly Puzzle Game of the “using mirrors to redirect beams of light” variety. This game stands out a bit more than the average game of its kind with a catchy music-infused presentation, but otherwise it’s not doing anything too out of the norm for the genre. If you’re a Puzzle game fan, this game is worth a look.
