Review:
Spectrum is a arcade-style maze game where you are simply trying to direct your little black goo ball creature to an exit. One button lets you rise up, the other one pushes you down faster than gravity will, and the control stick moves you. Any colored blocks in the maze will either damage you or kill you outright.
With such simple gameplay, it helps that the game has some inventive ideas when it comes to puzzle design. Walls that move in interesting ways, objects coming out of the background, air currents that blow you around, the game manages to keep things interesting throughout.
The game’s presentation is a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, you have the visuals, which have a simple, clean 3D presentation that, while not impressive, is still pleasant to look at. On the other hand, you have the game’s sound… ~sigh~. Given how dry the gameplay and visuals can be, this game needed a really nice soundtrack to enhance the experience. What it has, though, is a thoroughly depressing and mechanical soundtrack that made the game feel like a slog.
That’s not all the bad news. The game can be breezed through in just two hours (not counting bonus “dark” levels that need to be unlocked). And some of the later ones feel like they’re unreasonably difficult in the perfection they demand, especially in a game that seems suited to appeal to casual players.
In the end, Spectrum is an okay time-waster, but it’s one that comes with a few major issues, and doesn’t really present anything particularly outstanding or different for the genre beyond its clean look and presentation.
tl;dr – Spectrum is an arcade-style maze game where you try to reach each level’s exit without touching any colored blocks. It has some interesting level design and a solid visual presentation, but the game is far too short and the soundtrack is terrible.
