Review:

Splasher is a platformer that challenges players to run through a gauntlet of challenging levels where surfaces are coated with various substances that can change how they act, with goo that creates a bounce, or causes things to stick to it, or water that washes the goo away. And gradually, as the game progresses, players become able to fire off a stream of each of these themselves, using the unique properties of each to move forward.

Okay, so first things first, the physics in this game are fantastic. In a platformer it is absolutely vital that moving and jumping around feels fun, and this game does that exceptionally well, with all of the different physics elements feeling really good, and with appropriately visceral sound effects for all the fluids slopping all over the place.

If I had one criticism to point to in the gameplay, it’s that when you’re shooting fluids around, the game completely fails to make use of the second stick for aiming, requiring players to aim with the same controls they’re using to move, which seems like an unfortunate oversight.

Also, while the gameplay here is generally top-notch, the graphics leave something to be desired. The cartoonishly dystopian laboratory setting doesn’t exactly explode with personality, and it gets to feel a bit repetitive before very long.

Overall, Splasher is an excellent platformer that plays great and has a lot going for it, but there are definitely areas where it has room for improvement. Definitely worth a look though.

tl;dr – Splasher is a challenging platformer with some excellent physics and good use of the central concept of various fluids that get sloshed around the environment to change those physics. It’s a solid game that’s fun to play, but the levels feel a bit repetitive and there’s room for improvement.

Grade: B+
