Review:

Spooky Ghosts Dot Com is a Metroidvania released on PC in 2018 and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2019. This game puts players in the role of a young woman who works in a Ghostbusters-style agency who is one day called to a haunted house.

The presentation in this game is pretty simple, using unimpressive pixel art visuals and a forgettable chiptune soundtrack. It gets the job done, but only just.

As for the gameplay, this is a pretty uninspired entry in the genre, with slow progression in gaining new abilities, and very little that aids in traversal – more often than not, reaching new areas happens because you find a key, not some new ability. Add to that some mediocre platforming and combat, and the fact that there’s just not going for this game to make it worth your while in the 1-2 hours it takes to complete this game.

At this point, the Nintendo Switch is an absolute utopia for Metroidvania games, so even a $5 budget game like Spooky Ghosts Dot Com feels like a pretty pitiful enty in the genre when it’s surrounded by some of the best games the genre has ever seen. However, even if it weren’t competing against the likes of Hollow Knight, Ori and the Blind Forest and Axiom Verge, this would still be a pale, lackluster game that simply isn’t very fun to play.

tl;dr – Spooky Ghosts Dot Com is a mediocre Metroidvania that’s only a few hours long and doesn’t do much of interest with those few hours. Even its low $5 price tag isn’t enough to make up for its uninspired combat and platforming and poor grasp of what makes Metroidvanias compelling. Skip this one.
