Review:
Squad Killer, released on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in 2021, is an Action-Platformer with some Roguelike elements that has players taking on room after room full of squads of random enemies.
In terms of presentation, this game is rough, with simple pixel art visuals using a limited color palette. This unfortunately interferes with the gameplay too, making it difficult to tell at a glance which enemy is which, what’s an object that will block a bullet and what isn’t, and even making it easy to lose your own character in the fray. These visuals are backed by some pretty terrible chiptune music.
Unfortunately, the gameplay here doesn’t fare much better. The way enemies all teleport into each level at the same time can make for a chaotic situation where it feels like everything is ganging up on you, and enemies also feel a bit like bullet sponges. Your move set is very limited too, and it takes too long to earn the cash to get meaningful upgrades. And all of this is on top of the core platforming and gunplay just not being very good.
Squad Killer just doesn’t have much going in its favor. There are plenty of great Action-Platformers on Nintendo Switch, so I can’t see why anyone would want to play one that looks ugly, plays poorly, and has poor pacing. Skip this one.
tl;dr –Squad Killer is an Action-Platformer with light Roguelike elements. Unfortunately, it looks ugly, plays poorly, has terrible pacing, and there’s not really anything that makes it stand out among a crowd of much better Action-Platformers on the Nintendo Switch. Don’t bother with this one.
