Review:
Steamworld Dig is a platformer where players take on the role of a robot in a Wild-West-themed world of robots, digging into a cave to uncover its resources and hidden secrets.
In a way, this game has a lot in common with Terraria (which itself was like a 2D Minecraft), except Steamworld Dig’s scale is smaller, and instead of being an open world, it’s more of a Metroidvania, as each new area you progress to is gated off by an upgrade you need to acquire.
However, there’s also a Roguelike element to the game as well, since your limited inventory and dwindling lamp fuel means that you’ll be making frequent trips back to base camp. While this might seem like an annoyance, it’s usually a good opportunity to make purchases and beef up your character, and it helps to set the pacing of the game.
The presentation here is cute without being too cutesy. The robots are cartoony and make unintelligible robotic noises when they speak, and the juxtaposition of high tech and the faux-historic setting makes for a pretty memorable overall feel.
In the end, Steamworld Dig is a wonderful platformer with a unique presentation and a good mix of Metroidvania and Roguelike mechanics without actually being a Metroidvania or Roguelike. Definitely worth a look.
tl;dr – Steamworld Dig is a Platformer about a robot in a world of robots digging for treasures in an old mineshaft. It makes good use of Roguelike and Metroidvania elements, and has solid platforming and a unique presentation. This is a game well worth getting.
