Review:
Super Club Tennis is a family-friendly Tennis game released on Nintendo Switch in 2020, apparently either a port or expanded version of the developer’s earlier game, Club Tennis, which released on Xbox One in 2018… with a price tag of $70.99… and then apparently perpetually discounted to $9.99. If that sounds suspicious to you, congratulations on having bare minimum perceptive skills!
The presentation here isn’t terrible, but it’s not great either – you get a colorful presentation with cartoony, oddly-proportioned 3D characters backed by an energetic but forgettable soundtrack. It’s a very family-friendly presentation and it works, but it’s spoiled somewhat by the characters’ jerky animations and some excessively long loading times.
The gameplay here seems set up to be decent, with fairly simple movement and aiming controls, and a nice selection of unlockable tennis minigames. However, spending even the briefest amount of time playing the game will shatter this illusion – players have very little control over aiming their shots, and what’s worse, the game automatically moves your character to the place where the tennis ball will land. The result is that the game robs players of much of their utility of playing the game. Even Wii Sports Tennis, for all its simplicity, gave players some degree of control over their aim based on how they moved their racket.
I suppose on that note, I should address the next obvious question – no, this game does not support motion controls, nor does it support touchscreen controls for that matter. This is just a straightforward, but cartoony Tennis game with bad controls, and that’s it. At the very least this game was quickly dropped down to $30 from its initial absurd $60 launch price, but even $30 seems pricey for a game with such crippled gameplay.
It’s not like the folks who made Super Club Tennis didn’t try, or that they’re trying to pull one over on Nintendo Switch gamers (no comment on the Xbox predecessor though). There’s certainly some effort that was put into parts of this game, like the minigames. However, the terrible gameplay makes this a Tennis game you’ll want to skip – there are far better offerings on the Nintendo Switch for Tennis lovers.

tl;dr – Super Club Tennis is a cartoony Tennis game that offers a nice collection of unlockable tennis minigames, and may have had potential to be a worthwhile tennis game, but terrible controls that rob the player of utility make this a game that simply isn’t fun to play even with all that extra content.
