Review:
Super Crush KO is an Action-Platformer where players take the role of a young girl who’s on a quest to rescue her kidnapped cat. This game was released in 2020 for PC and Nintendo Switch.
The visuals here are simple but appealing, featuring hand-drawn 2D visuals with a pastel-heavy color palette. I’d say my one complaint about the way the game looks is how monotonous it all is – enemies all look similar, and so do the stages, making everything blend together and seem even more repetitive than it already is (but I’m getting ahead of myself). This is backed by a lighthearted soundtrack that’s not very memorable, but works well enough for the action.
As for that action, if there’s one thing this game gets very right, it’s the combat system, which is fun, fluid, and really makes you feel like a bad ass when you string together a long combo, dodging enemies and mixing it up along the way.
Unfortunately, while the action is outstanding, the rest of the game it finds itself in is bland, boring, and repetitive. The level designs repeat often enough that you’ll have a constant feeling of deja vu, and new enemies and situations don’t get introduced nearly as often as they should. The result is that even though in the minute-to-minute the action here is phenomenal, in the grand scheme of things the game feels far less engaging than it should.
I still recommend Super Crush KO for its excellent fighting engine – it’s a blast to punch, kick, and shoot your way through enemies… it’s just not so fun to keep fighting through the same enemies in similar locations in similar situations over and over again. But if you just want to unwind with some cool action, Super Crush KO is well worth a try.
tl;dr – Super Crush KO is an Action-Platformer with a fantastic fighting engine that’s unfortunately wasted on repetitive level design and repetitive enemies. This is a game that’s more likely to be fun in short bursts, because the core gameplay is phenomenal… it just gets old a bit more quickly than I’d like it to.
