Review:

Super Dungeon Tactics is a Turn-Based Strategy-RPG that falls closer to the Tactics-style of Strategy-RPG than the XCOM style, meaning that precise positioning your units is going to play the most crucial role during combat. This game is based on the board game Super Dungeon Explore, which I haven’t played, so I can’t say how this compares to that. However, I can speak to how well it works in its own right.

I feel like in just about every area, Super Dungeon Tactics has some stuff going for it and some stuff going against it. The presentation, for example, features some really good character designs, and a clean look that makes it easy to see what’s going on in the thick of battle. On the other hand, so much of what we’re presented with is generic. The characters are named after their respective classes, dialogue is conveyed only by text, and the music is completely forgettable. It’s disappointing that a game with expressive character designs like this could feel so very bland.

The gameplay also has its ups and downs. On the one hand, its system of tasking players with assigning random buffs and debuffs each turn is clever, and a lot of the actual fighting here is nicely streamlined. On the other hand, the character management here is minimal, meaning there doesn’t feel like very much depth or variety here. Also, the interface is needlessly confusing, and the game does a poor job guiding players through it.

In the end, what we’re left with is a mostly forgettable strategy-RPG. While Super Dungeon Tactics does a few interesting things, it is largely a bland, forgettable experience on a platform with a wealth of other good Strategy-RPGs to play. You’re better off trying one of those first.

tl;dr – Super Dungeon Tactics is a Tactics-style Turn-Based Strategy-RPG based on a board game. It does a few things of note for the genre, but for the most part this is a bland, shallow, forgettable experience marred by a poorly-designed interface. It’s not terrible, but there are many better options on the Switch.
