Review:
Super Mega Baseball is a Baseball game that looks like a silly, cartoony, arcade-style baseball game, but underneath the goofy exterior lies a surprisingly good simulation of the sport, albeit without any official MLB license.
This game’s presentation features characters with giant heads and exaggerated proportions, and the overall style here feels something like a caricature of the sport. However, if you’re not put off by it being a caricature, it should be said that this is an excellent caricature, with some excellent animation, good detail in both the players and the imaginative stadiums they play in, loads of personality coming through every element of the game’s design, and a superb resolution and framerate. While this might not be up to par with the likes of MLB The Show, it’s honestly astounding that a game that looks this good came from a small indie developer.
However, perhaps the greatest trick this game pulled is managing to design gameplay that caters both to the casuals and to more seasoned fans looking for a detailed simulation. If all you want to do is hit a few balls in a friendly game, this game makes it pretty easy to get into things, and does a good job of automating the stuff you’re not micromanaging… however, if you’re looking to get into the nitty-gritty of the intricacies of both managing your team and putting your own touch on each play, this game has a surprising amount of depth in every corner of the game. In addition to this, the game’s approach to difficulty selection in its “ego” system is highly adjustable, letting players make tiny adjustments to get the difficulty juuuuust right.
Also wonderful is this game’s huge array of options for both local and online multiplayer play, allowing players to play against one another in teams (up to 2v2), or for two players to cooperate against computer-controlled AI (online or off). However, be warned that you’ll want to bring a friend along for this – at this point you’re not likely to find random matches online.
With the only other serious contender for best baseball game on the Nintendo Switch being the RBI Baseball series, Super Mega Baseball 2 is, at least at the moment, kinda’ the best baseball game on the Switch by default. However, that’s not to say it doesn’t earn its position – it’s an excellent baseball game with a great presentation that’s full of personality, plenty of good features, and gameplay that does a great job catering both to casuals and more serious players. If you’re a baseball fan on the Switch, consider this game a must-buy.
tl;dr – Super Mega Baseball 2 is a Baseball game with a cartoony appearance that hides robust gameplay that does a good job catering both to casual players as well as more serious fans of the sport, with good options and excellent support for multiplayer play both online and off. It doesn’t have the real-life license or teams, and you’re not likely to find strangers to play with online, but if you’re looking for a baseball game on the Nintendo Switch, this is the one to get.
