(Note: This game is included in the Super Sports Blast bundle along with Super Soccer Blast and Super Tennis Blast.)

Super Volley Blast is a family-friendly Volleyball game released on multiple platforms in 2018, including Nintendo Switch. This game is the first title in developer Unfinished Pixel’s “Blast” line of sports games.

The presentation in this game is decent, albeit unimpressive. The game uses simple, colorful, slightly-cartoony 3D visuals that vaguely resemble Nintendo’s Miis, as well as some simple, colorful slightly-cartoony courts to match. This is paired with decent sound and upbeat but forgettable music. It works, but isn’t anything special.

The gameplay here is mostly decent, with simple, straightforward controls that make hitting and passing fairly simple and straightforward, and retain the strategy of the sport. Unfortunately, there’s one element that seriously hinders this game – the hit detection turns to trash the moment you make a character jump. Jump and try to hit the ball, and it’s a roll of the dice whether you’ll make contact. At the very least, this game has a decent tutorial and a good smattering of options for players who want to try out one of a small selection of alternate game modes.

In the end, Super Volley Blast is a mostly solid Volleyball game with a frustrating gameplay flaw that keeps it from reaching its full potential. For the most part the gameplay and options provided here are solid, but the way the game makes jumping a crapshoot really brings down the experience for me. Still, if you’re looking for a good Volleyball game on Nintendo Switch, this one is at least decent.

.

tl;dr – Super Volley Blast is a family-friendly, slightly-cartoony volleyball game with a good tutorial, some good options, and mostly solid gameplay. Unfortunately, the way hit detection becomes atrocious the minute your character jumps brings down what would otherwise be a solid entry in the genre. Fans of Volleyball on Nintendo Switch may still want to give it a look, but casual players are better off looking for something else.
