Review:
Portal Dogs (no relation to The Portal Series) is a Puzzle-Platformer released on PC and Nintendo Switch in 2020 that has you controlling multiple cartoony “dogs” to direct them toward portals.
This game has a hand-drawn presentation that’s not bad, but nothing special either, outside of the odd look of the “dogs” themselves – not only do they not look anatomically right for “dogs”, but they’re oddly green-colored too. This is paired with a largely forgettable lighthearted soundtrack.
As for the gameplay itself, I almost hesitate to even call this a Puzzle-Platformer, as there’s not much here that feels truly puzzling, although this game does give players the challenge of controlling multiple dogs at once, occasionally transforming them into… tadpole things… and at times making sure to collect keys or additional dogs in a proper order. In any case, the puzzle design here isn’t anything special, and neither is the platforming, which feels loose. In fact, a lot about this game feels a bit loose and sloppy – the menu design, the level design… this feels like a fairly low-rent game.
Portal Dogs isn’t a terrible game, to be clear. It’s not a very well-designed game, but it’s not an unplayable mess either. It’s a bit sloppy and doesn’t really do anything especially well, but I suppose if you’re looking for a lighthearted Puzzle-Platformer that goes light on the “puzzle” side of things, you might find something worthwhile here.
tl;dr – Portal Dogs is a Puzzle-Platformer that has you guiding green “dogs” to portals. It’s not terrible, but a lot of things about this game feel sloppy and not very well-designed, and the puzzles aren’t compelling.
