Review:

Rayman Legends is a Platformer, the second game in recent years where Ubisoft brought Rayman back to the realm of 2D after the character’s 3D platformers. And on the Switch, players are getting what is being dubbed the “definitive version”, which adds in all the DLC from previous versions of the game as well as a few extra modes and minigames.

At its core though, this is a straight-up platformer through and through, with a pretty good variety of levels but otherwise pretty standard game design. The game does manage to do some interesting things with touch controls if you’re playing it in portable mode, thanks to one of the game’s helper characters, but this character can still be controlled with a button press in docked mode as well.

While the game doesn’t do anything spectacular with gameplay, everywhere else, it shines. For starters, the game is gorgeous, featuring a lovingly-detailed 2D art style, wonderful animation, and expressive character design. In addition, this game has a wealth of content, including numerous alternate character skins, minigames, online competitions, and even 40 of Rayman Origin’s 66 levels unlockable in the game.

What Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition lacks in originality, it makes up for in content and presentation, ending up as a fantastic experience that anyone who enjoys platformers should snatch up.

tl;dr – Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition is a platformer that doesn’t do anything especially new with the genre, but what it does do is bring quality gameplay, tons of content, and a gorgeous presentation. If you’re a fan of 2D platformers, this game is for you.

Grade: B+
