Review:

Redneck Skeet Shooting is an Arcade-style game that… okay, look, I know what you’re thinking. A game called Redneck Skeet Shooting can’t possibly be any good, can it? Hey, I’ve been delightfully surprised before! On the Xbox 360’s Indie Arcade there was a game called Bird Assassin that was surprisingly good and well worth the small cost! But Redneck Skeet Shooting…. no, no, this game is terrible.

The gameplay here is fairly simple – on the left side of the screen, you have a gun you can raise or lower to adjust your aim, and objects get tossed up in an arc from the right side. You’re tasked with shooting the objects before they fall, and avoiding any explosives that get tossed out.

It’s a simple premise that has some good potential for some fun, arcade-style gameplay, but unfortunately, this game screws this simple formula up in multiple ways.

Firstly, your character is constantly lowering his aim, meaning that you are always fighting with the game to adjust your aim. This is absurdly frustrating, and it feels like maybe the game’s designer felt the game was too easy and added in something to screw things up out of desperation to try to make it balance out.

Secondly, the game’s levels are timed, cutting short your fun, and on top of this they end automatically if you hit an explosive. To make matters worse, the game hides the majority of its content behind unlock payments earned through the game, and it takes forever to earn these points, with the interruptions to restart the level only making this frustration even more noticeable.

As for the presentation, the visuals and sound are cartoonish and work fine for the game’s theme, but do little to salvage the otherwise terrible experience of this game. Oh, and there are customization options, but they’re locked behind, you guessed it, points you need to earn in the game.

I really try not to judge a game with a word like “Redneck” in the title, but games like Redneck Skeet Shooting make it feel like those leaps to judgment are justified – this is a terrible game, with broken gameplay that has you fighting to keep the stupid gun up and broken progression that makes it take forever to accomplish anything in the game. Don’t bother with this one.

tl;dr – Redneck Skeet Shooting is an Arcade-style game that is just as awful as you probably think it is. Terrible busted controls, overly simple gameplay, and slow-as molasses game progression make for a torturous experience that’s not worth getting.
