Review:

Robonauts is an Action-Platformer released on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in 2017 and ported to PC in 2021. In this game, players take the role of a robot hopping from planet to planet trying to exterminate space-bugs.

The presentation here is decent, featuring simple but colorful 3D visuals backed by an energetic techno-style soundtrack. There’s nothing particularly noteworthy going on here, but it works well enough for the game, although I feel like the characters designs here seem somewhat generic.

The planet-hopping gameplay is one of the biggest focal points here, with players tapping X to hop to any planet directly above them as they circle around the small planets taking out bugs. It’s not a bad premise, and under better circumstances, this could have made for a solid Action-Platformer.

Unfortunately, this game has multiple problems. Mainly, this game doesn’t let you aim your gunfire, it automatically targets enemies and when you get swarmed by enemies you just have to hope your character targets the enemy you want to destroy. As if that wasn’t bad enough, your character can’t keep up with the movements of fast-moving enemies. Come on, game, if you’re going to take away my ability to aim and give it to an AI, at least make the AI good at it!

There are other problems too. Even ignoring the issues with aiming, the gameplay here feels pretty repetitive, with enemies seeming just a tad bullet-spongey. In addition, this is one of those games that has your character hopping repeatedly if you hold down the jump button.

While Robonauts isn’t a terrible game, and I could see some people having fun with it, I feel like this game has far too many issues to be worth bothering with, especially on a platform with so many better options. In my opinion, this is a game to skip.

tl;dr – Robonauts is an Action-Platformer where players play as a robot hopping from planet to planet to exterminate space-bugs. Unfortunately, the game won’t allow players to aim, and the AI isn’t exactly great at aiming. There are other problems here as well, and while this still isn’t a terrible game, I don’t see much reason to play it when there are so many better options on Nintendo Switch.
