Rock ‘N Racing Off Road DX is a Top-Down Racing game in the same vein as arcade classics like Super Off-Road. This game was released on Wii U and Xbox One in 2015 before being ported to the PlayStation 4 and finally, in 2017, to the Nintendo Switch.
Graphically, Rock ‘N Racing Off Road DX is a pretty unambitious game, featuring a fixed camera with simple 3D racers (that look like cheap toy trucks) on a simple 3D course. What’s here works well enough, but it’s not going to impress anyone, and the option to make the courses 3D even though the camera is fixed means that there’s completely unnecessary aliasing going on here. These visuals are paired with a forgettable energetic soundtrack, passable engine noises, and a strange, cheesy announcer, who says things like “kart your engines”.
Unfortunately, while the graphics here may be passable, the gameplay doesn’t even come close.I found the controls for this game damn near impossible to wrangle with. It seemed like one moment the game would fight me when I was trying to turn my vehicle, and the next moment it would suddenly turn unrealistically quickly. Often, my vehicle would start turning without any input from me.
I don’t think I’ve ever had to fight a Racing game for control over my own vehicle in the way I had to struggle with Rock ‘N Racing Off Road DX, which doesn’t just have terrible controls, it seems outright possessed. Under no circumstances should you subject yourself to this terrible game.
tl;dr – Rock ‘N Racing Off Road DX is a Top-Down Racing game in the same vein as Super Off-Road. Unfortunately, the controls here are broken beyond recognition, making it less a race against other vehicles and more of a struggle with your own vehicle. Do not buy this game.
