Review:
Rogue Singularity is a 3D Platformer with a gimmick that the game’s levels are all randomized. Players take the role of a robot essentially being put through a series of obstacle courses trying to reach a goal.
Randomized level design is a tricky thing to get right in a game, especially a genre like Platformers where the level design is such an extremely important component of the game design – it is very easy for levels to feel samey, or for the lack of human logic going into their design to make them messy and nonsensical.
Unfortunately, the latter problem I just mentioned is very apparent here – this game’s levels don’t have any rhyme or reason to them, with levels branching off into dead ends, obstacles that can be completely circumvented by simply moving around them, and no real sense of progression or anything like that.
These game’s levels all take place on floating platforms suspended over an endless abyss, and the obstacles on platforms have overly-large hitboxes and can one-hit kill you, so it feels like this game is trying to make up for the low difficulty caused by its broken level design by compensating with a broken challenge level in its hazards. Suffice it to say, two wrongs don’t make a right here.
As for the actual platforming here, it’s fine. Your character is pretty zippy and has a decent variety in his move set, although I would say that he feels a bit too capable – his good jumping abilities are a large part of the reason why it often feels like the best way to proceed through a level is to simply jump over or around anything that isn’t a safe platform. Also, this game’s camera is pretty bad.
To top everything off, the graphics in this game are not in any way impressive, but beyond that, they’re not really memorable, either. Players are given the ability to change the way their robot looks using collectible robot parts you can gather, but nothing here really has any distinctive personality here.
There are some interesting ideas at work in Rogue Singularity, but they needed more time in development to be properly utilized. The random level design generally means unfocused levels with poor pacing and progression, the hit detection for hazards seems overly-aggressive to compensate for how frequently easy it is for you to circumvent these obstacles, and the game overall has a lack of personality that makes it largely forgettable. It’s not a bad game, but there’s not really much here for players on a game system that’s absolutely loaded with great Platformers.
tl;dr – Rogue Singularity is a 3D Platformer where you play as a robot jumping around on randomized levels. Unfortunately, the randomized level design results in unfocused levels with a poor sense of progression, the game has hit detection and camera problems, and the whole thing has a general lack of personality. It’s not without its charms, but there are far better Platformers available on the Switch.
