Review:

Röki is a Graphic Adventure about a girl searching for her young brother after their household is attacked by a massive monster. Released on PC in 2020 and ported to Nintendo Switch later that same year, Röki is a game with fantastical elements as well as some moments that might almost qualify as horror, with the game’s lore drawing heavily from Norse mythology.

In terms of presentation, Röki is an absolutely gorgeous game, making use of simple 3D visuals and a lovely palette to paint a truly gorgeous image of the Norse wilderness, with a lot of painstaking attention paid to things light lighting and shadows that really make the world come alive. This is paired with a wonderful soundtrack that underscores this beauty, or the tension in situations of danger.

As for the gameplay, this is a pretty straightforward Graphic Adventure game, with objects to collect and use to solve puzzles. These puzzles are fairly reasonable (no nonsensical “Sierra Logic” here), but can nevertheless have you scratching your head at points trying to figure out where to go or what to do. At the very least, the game will highlight objects on-screen that can be interacted with if you press in the left thumbstick.

All told, Röki is a solid Graphic Adventure game with a fantastic presentation and a great mix of awe and suspense, as well as an overall intriguing depiction of Norse folklore. If you’re a fan of the genre, definitely give this game a try.

tl;dr – Röki is a Graphic Adventure about a girl searching for her missing brother after their home is attacked by a massive monster. While the gameplay is pretty standard for the genre, the presentation here is phenomenal, really drawing you into its beautiful natural locales and mythical Norse folklore. If you’re a fan of this genre, you should definitely give this game a try.
