Review:
Run the Fan is an Arcade-style game that combines the ball-rolling of games like Marble Madness with puzzles that have you trying to complete an electrical circuit, with the metal ball bridging the gaps.
While this seems like an interesting setup for a puzzle game, Run the Fan is more interested in fast-paced Arcade-style play, with players racing to the end of each line before a spark can reach it.
Unfortunately, I don’t feel that the gameplay styles mesh well here – rolling the ball tilts the screen, often making it hard to see parts of the level, and the game makes you feel constantly rushed when you’d often rather take a moment to analyze the level.
Graphically, this game is fine, nothing special but it works well enough for its theme, looking like the gameplay is taking place on a circuit board in a computer. The music is annoyingly repetitive though.
The different parts that comprise Run the Fan are decent, and I definitely think a solid game could have been made by combining them, but ultimately I feel like these different components work against one another, with the need to be at a specific spot at a specific time making for stop-go action that feels frustrating if you’re looking for a puzzle game, and frustrating if you’re just looking for something more fast-paced. In the end, this game just isn’t very fun.
tl;dr – Run the Fan is an Arcade-style game that combines the ball-rolling of games like Monkey Ball with puzzle elements that require you to use the ball to complete a circuit. Unfortunately, these puzzle elements slow down the action, and the action makes the puzzles frustrating. The result is a game that just isn’t very fun.
